About the Teacher


Gus Paul Chrysson, Founder and Director

 

     A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Gus began his musical studies at a young age, beginning with piano and switching to voice as a young teenager. 


     A Lyric Tenor, Gus maintains an active performance schedule of concerts and recitals. Recent appearances include solos with the Metropolitan Greek Chorale, The Church of the Heavenly Rest, The Richmond Choral Society, The Second Avenue Dance Company, The Church of the Transfiguration, National Chorale, and the Arcadian Chorale. As a professional ensemble singer, Gus sings with the New York Philharmonic (NY Choral Artists), Opera Orchestra of New York (NY Choral Ensemble), and the National Chorale.  As a recitalist, he has appeared in New York City, North Carolina, and in San José, Costa Rica, presenting recitals of Operatic and Latin American Popular Repertoire. 


    Gus's endeavors in teaching voice are not limited to the private studio. He has taught voice at the Community Music School of the UNC School of the Arts, NYU's Gallatin School, and at Teachers College of Columbia University. As a guest lecturer and clinician, he has presented workshops on vocal technique and repertoire for schools, churches, and universities throughout the country. 


Gus's students have appeared in Opera, on the Concert Stage, on National Tours of Broadway Musicals, and with the Walt Disney Company, among others.


    An avid Choral Conductor and specialist in Sacred Music, Gus is currently the Interim Director of Music at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, where he conducts the Cathedral Choir for Sunday Liturgies and Feast Days. 


   As Director of Music for the Campus Ministry Division of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, Gus oversees a Choral Internship for Voice Majors, which he founded in 2004, at the historic Church of the Ascension, in Manhattan. 


    Gus holds an MA in Music and Music Education from Columbia University, with a concentration in the Teaching of Singing and Choral Conducting. Additionally, he holds a BMus in Voice Performance from New York University.
